Danes fall at Boston University

BOSTON ? There was one slice of good news for the University at Albany basketball team as the America East Conference barrels towards the end of the regular season.

The Danes will not have to worry about Boston University in the upcoming America East Tournament, which will be played at SEFCU Arena in a couple weeks.

Boston University extended its winning streak over the Danes to eight straight game with a 79-69 win at Case Gym.

The Danes will not have to worry about the Terriers (10-4, 16-11) anymore. Boston University is not eligible for the America East Tournament because the league is not allowing the Terriers to play because they are leaving to play in the Patriot League next season.

With two games left in the America East regular season, the Danes are 8-6 in the league (19-9 overall). UAlbany went into Wednesday night in sole possession of fourth place in the league, but are now tied with Hartford, which beat New Hampshire 49-44 at home Wednesday.

If the Danes and Hartford finish tied in the league, UAlbany will get fourth place because of two wins over the Hawks in the regular season. And that would also mean they would get the third seed in the tournament because Boston University isn?t invited.

To win the America East Tournament, the Danes would most likely have to beat Vermont and Stony Brook, the two teams ahead of them in the league. UAlbany is 0-3 against those teams this year with one game left at Stony Brook on the final day of the regular season.

?This (Boston University) is a tough matchup for us,? UAlbany coach Will Brown said. ?I am glad they are moving on.?

The Danes had trouble with just about every aspect of the Terriers. The Danes were playing without starting guard Peter Hooley, who was back in Albany recovering from a concussion. He was replaced in the starting lineup by junior forward Gary Johnson, who had five points and five rebounds in 27 minutes.

Boston University was having problems all night long with the BU backcourt of D,J. Irving (18 points), and freshman Maurice Watson Jr. (11 points). The Terrier center, 6-foot-7, 240-pound Dom Morris made six of seven shots and scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

And, the Danes also could not contain shooting guard John Papale, who had 18 points and made four of seven shots from 3-point range, as did Irving.

?It was a tough matchup for us,? said UAlbany sophomore forward Sam Rowley, who had 18 points, eight rebounds and tied his career high with four assists.

You would get no arguments from Brown about that one.

The Danes trailed 32-30 at halftime and never led in the second half, falling behind by as many as 13 points. Whenever the Terriers needed a big shot, they got it. The Terriers made 10 of 25 shots from 3-point range while the Danes were 3-15..

Despite not having a shot to play in the America East tournament, the Terriers still have a lot to play for. They are tied for second with Vermont in the standings and are one game behind first place Stony Brook. Boston University still has a game left with the Seawolves, here, a week from Thursday.

The regular season winner of the America East gets an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament.

?I talked about these games being the first, second, third round of the (America East) Tournament for us,? BU coach Joe Jones said. ?We aren?t doing that now. We are playing well right now and we just want to finish strong.?

BU has won five straight games and eight of its last nine.

The Danes were led by senior guard Mike Black, who had 21 points. No other player besides Rowley was in double figures.

After Saturday?s BracketBuster game at Fairfield, the Danes are home against New Hampshire next Thursday before heading to Stony Brook for the regular season finale on March 3.

?We still think we have a good foundation for the tournament,? Rowley said. ?And we are excited to see what happens in the next few games.?
