A massive storm system carrying potentially severe thunderstorms, damaging winds and possibly even tornadoes was soaking the nation?s midsection on Thursday, with flash floods reported in Chicago and heavy rain expected to cause major flooding along the Mississippi River.

NewsNation's Tamron Hall reports on the massive storm which called flash flooding in Chicago.

Flooding in the Chicago area ? with more than 4 inches of rain reported -- closed major expressways and filled up the city?s underground storm and sewer overflow system. City engineers were forced to reroute the water system, known as the ?deep tunnel? into Lake Michigan, NBCChicago.com reported. Residents, however, were not expected to see any overflowing of sewers or any impact on the lake, officials said.

A water main broke on Chicago's South Side and the gushing water opened up a sinkhole that swallowed three cars.

Parts of the Edens and Eisenhower expressways in Lake County, Ill., were closed in both directions, the station's website reported. ?

Gov. Pat Quinn declared a state of emergency across Illinois as thousands of people struggled with flood damage even as another wave of wet weather was on the way.

Quinn said a hospital in Morris, Ill., had to be evacuated and two trailer parks severely flooded.?

"Heavy rainfall over the past few days has created dangerous flooding in areas across the state," Quinn said, NBCChicago.com reported. "Everyone should stay home and off the roads if possible. To ensure safety as these storms continue, people should be alert and avoid flooded areas."

Residents were told to tune in to local TV and radio stations for updated information about any closed roadways or evacuations.

Heavy rain caused a sinkhole in Chicago that swallowed three cars. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

More than 500 flights were canceled at Chicago?s O?Hare Airport due to the extreme weather, and some trains were delayed. Air travelers were urged to check airline websites or call to confirm whether flights were still planned.

In Midland, Mich., Northwood University canceled classes for the rest of the week because of flooding problems, NBC station WDIV reported.

The Weather Channel's Greg Forbes, a severe weather expert, categorized the storm as a ?major/massive flood event? for the Midwest.

Flood watches and warnings were posted on Thursday stretching from northeastern Oklahoma to much of Missouri, northern and central Illinois, southern and central Wisconsin, and parts of Lower Michigan,?Weather.com said.

Flood warnings were issued in some cases for areas already swamped by melting snow.

Seventeen gauges placed along the Mississippi River to monitor the rising water already showed major flooding, Forbes said, and the water was predicted to rise in the next 24 hours in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Indeed, the band of predicted extreme weather stretched from northern Michigan to Houston and the Texas coastal area.

States along the Eastern Seaboard were set for heavy rain on Friday, Weather.com reported. The tornado risk, however, was expected to diminish as the storm moved east. Still,?heavy rain was likely in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area as well as the Atlantic Coast.

A forecast issued late Wednesday by the National Weather Service showed a 40 percent chance that the Red River will top the 2009 record of just under 41 feet.

Fargo City Administrator Pat Zavoral said he's confident the area will be protected. He said a forecast closer to 44 feet would have made things "a little dicey."

Depression: Why life can feel out of control

Apr. 18, 2013 ? People with depression often feel their life is out of control. It can evoke feelings that their life is pointless or by merely existing bad things can happen. Research funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) suggests that these feeling may be caused by subtle changes in the way depressed people perceive time and process their surroundings.

Experiments by psychology researchers Dr Rachel Msetfi from the University of Limerick, Ireland, and Dr Robin Murphy at the University of Oxford in the UK, used a computer-based task to explore how healthy as well as depressed volunteers responded to simple tasks in which they had varying levels of control.

They were asked to test the reliability of a remote controller in different rooms of a virtual house. The remote would switch on the hi-fi in each room with a certain level of reliability; sometimes the music would come on immediately, sometimes with a slight delay and sometimes it would start even when the volunteer decided not to use the remote.

The experiment was designed so that in different rooms the volunteers had different levels of control. In some rooms pressing the remote control worked well. In other rooms the remote was less reliable, giving the volunteers less control. After many goes at using the remote controller in a room each participant was asked about how much control they felt they had using the remote, and the extent to which the behaviour of the hi-fi was governed by the room, not them pressing the button.

Dr Msetfi's analysis showed that when there were longer delays, either between opportunities to press the remote button or between pressing the button and the music turning on, depressed people responded differently than others. Interestingly, with these longer delays, their judgements were actually more realistic than those of the healthy volunteers.

This finding supports other studies which suggest that people with depression experience time as passing more slowly; they also tend to process cues from their environment and context differently to people without depression.

"When depressed people have more time to process information about cause and effect, due to their slower perception of time they tend to take more notice of their environment which is often beyond their control, hence their feelings of helplessness," says Msetfi. "We see that contrary to the cognitive theory of depression, which emphasises the effects of irrational thought, here very subtle changes in perceptions have a strong knock on effect on other cognitive processes and feelings of control."

Msetfi also suggests that her research may also help to explain why mindfulness therapy is so successful in treating depression and preventing relapse. "Mindfulness is about paying more attention to what is happening right now. If time moves more slowly for people with depression and makes them oversensitive to their surroundings, mindfulness may work because it recalibrates their perceptions to find a better balance."

ESPNcricinfo IPL Fantasy League guide: Pune Warriors vs Hyderabad Sunrisers

The Indian Premiere League (IPL) proceedings will continue with Pune Warriors taking on Hyderabad Sunrisers in local conditions on gameday 15, i.e. April 17, 2013.

It is extremely difficult to pick a favourite as far as the possible outcome of the encounter between the two teams is concerned, as they have both earned quite a reputation for surprising the opposition in both good and bad ways. Their biggest problem so far in the tournament has been their lack of consistency despite having some pretty solid players in their line-up, though Pune Warriors have had a bit of a hard time playing their full strength due to injuries and, in the case of skipper Angelo Matthews, politics.

For the ESPNcricinfo IPL Fantasy League enthusiasts, there are plenty of points for you to win today, though you will have to make some really smart selections.

Keeping in mind that the match will be played in Pune, the pitch should be expected to assist the bowlers, while making it extremely hard for the batsmen to get the runs.

Since the pitch would not be easy to bat on, you should adopt a very conservative approach while adding batmen to your Fantasy League playing XI.

Pune Warrior?s Aaron Finch has been in great touch lately and he gets his runs at a good pace as well, which means bonus points. Therefore, it can pay off to have him in your team. Yuvraj Singh is expected to miss yet another game due to injury, so do not make the mistake of putting him in your team.

From the Hyderabad Sunriser?s side, Cameron White and Steven Smith are your best bet. White is a bit of a risk, but if he gets going, he can score big. As for Smith, he has already shown his mood to make an impact in as many games as he gets. Kumar Sangakkara has not exactly been in great touch, so do not take the risk of using up a transfer to have him in your team. He might not even play today?s match, as there are plenty of players in the dugout who can serve as good replacements.

As for the bowlers, Dale Steyn and Thisara Perera, a more than handy all-rounder, should be in your team. Amit Mishra would also be an excellent choice, considering the pitch for today?s match.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Rahul Sharma can prove to be good choices for today?s match as well. Kumar in particular is bound to trouble the batsmen with his swinging deliveries.

Rolomotion Aims to Bring Wii-Style Gaming to Apple TV and iPhone ...

Rolocule's Rolomotion is designed to convert an iPhone or an iPod touch into a motion controller, similar to a Nintendo Wii Remote. The iPhone motion controller combines with games streamed over AirPlay using the Apple TV, allowing for motion-based gaming directly on a television.

The Rolomotion concept takes advantage of the iPhone's gyroscope, magnetometer and accelerometer to track movements, which are then translated on the screen.

rolomotion_3
Motion Tennis, the first game that incorporates Rolomotion, plays similarly to Wii Sports Tennis on the Wii gaming console. The iPhone is used as a tennis racket, and when swung, the character on the screen will swing as well.

According to Rolocule, Motion Tennis uses in-game optimizations to minimize mirroring lag and will also feature a multiplayer mode.

As with all products of this type, enticing developers to use the technology is a significant hurdle to overcome. Rolocule is planning on releasing additional games in the future, but there is no word on whether an SDK will be made available.

The company is planning on sending out a limited number of beta invites during the last week of April to prospective gamers who sign up on the website.
